From the publisher:
When it comes to identity, the mantra of our moment is “just be yourself.” Although it sounds positive and affirming, a self-made identity is actually devastating.
If identity is built on personality and gifts, when we encounter people who are more talented or attractive, our self-image plummets. When we do succeed, we’re tempted to look down on others. An identity that rises and falls with success and failure is exhausting, demoralizing, and dehumanizing.
In his short book, The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, Tim Keller explains how the gospel shifts our focus from self to Christ, rescuing us from the tyranny of insecurity and pride. Keller shows that Christianity offers something more durable than self-esteem. Our identity doesn’t come from personal performance, but from the person and work of Jesus Christ.
When the gospel is deeply received it transforms all of life. Criticism no longer cripples us. We genuinely listen to others without worrying about what they think of us. We rest in God’s grace instead of sprinting to earn it.
Do you long for this kind of life?
This book will help you understand the freedom that is already yours in Christ. It will give you practical tools to live in the security of his grace every day.
This book is very well reviewed, but I thought it was quite poor. It was about 3 or 4 times longer than it should have been (like a 10 minute talk stretched into a 45 minute sermon, then transcribed). It was also surprisingly un-Biblical (his hermeneutics left something to be desired).
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I think Keller can be that way. He is very thoughtful and thought provoking. I appreciate his work. However, I have felt that way about some of his other books and writings before. I haven't read it. Generally, I enjoy what he has to say. It makes me think.
