Baptism Devotion and Testimonies - August, 9 2020

Image
WELCOME Welcome! I am pastor Rob. Today is one my favorite Sunday of the year, Baptism Sunday. We get to celebrate God at work in people’s lives. God is at work. Today, we get to hear it and see it. We have six testimonies of God’s grace, eight including our other site: Converge Community Church. BAPTISMWe believe baptism is important. Before Jesus’ ministry began, he was baptized. One of the last things he said before he left Earth was for his disciples to baptize. The disciples were followers of Jesus. Disciples follow his example and teaching. Disciples still do that today. Baptism is important for God and His people.  WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?Why? Why does it matter? What is the big deal about baptism? IDENTIFICATION CARDHow many of you have a wallet or a purse? Raise your hands. Great. In it, do you have this, a driver’s license? If you get pulled over driving, you will want to have one of these. And if you are a parent of a teenager, you know the excitement and work of getting one o…

GOD IS ABLE by Priscilla Shirer (Free Audiobook)

Image
This month Chrsitianaudio.com is giving away free God is Able by Priscilla Shirer a book from B&H Publishing. From the publisher: Got an IMPOSSIBLE situation? The anxiety it brings can wake you in the middle of a needed night’s sleep and then stalk you in the middle of broad daylight. It can sneak up on you and cast a cloak of fear and concern over your shoulders that you can’t seem to shake no matter how hard you try. It can take you down. Squash all hope. Stop you in your tracks. IMPOSSIBLE. IMPENETRABLE. UNCHANGEABLE. Maybe so . . . until God gets involved. No matter the details of your circumstance, His raw power potential and immeasurable ability refuse to cower in the face of any challenge. Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing. Not even that thing. This is the uplifting, well-reasoned answer from New York Times best-selling author Priscilla Shirer—not a denial of life’s adversities and troubles, but a biblical reminder that God is always up to great things, even when His …

History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel, 3rd ed. by J. Louis Martyn (Free)

Image
Logos is giving away free History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel, 3rd ed. by J. Louis Martyn. Westminster John Knox Press published the most recent edition.
From an Amazon top reviewer: In 1925, J. Louis Martyn was born. In this the third edition issued in 2003, some further updating is undertaken and accomplished. The original was published in 1968, and Johannine studies have never been the same. Until this slim but seminal work, it was generally held that John the Apostle was responsible for the gospel bearing that name. Had not Martyn's associate at Union Theological Seminary the great Raymond E. Brown so stated in his book on the Gospel of John in 1965?
Brown's response to this book was quite simple. He accepted Martyn's theories, changed his mind, moved on, and became perhaps the most significant Johannine scholar of the late 20th Century. And what did Martyn posit? Up to five Johns in the New Testament: John the Apostle, John the Evangelist, John the Redactor, John…
