Words of Life Amid Hurt and Pain (Article)

Image
New Growth Press published an article yesterday I wrote about hurt, pain, and the Words of Christ.

---

“Do you want to see a picture of my dad I found?”

“Sure. When was the last time you saw him?”

“About twenty years ago.”

My friend Matt* wheeled his wheelchair around the room and pulled out a faded bent polaroid picture of his father with a white shirt yellowed over time, a beer, a friend, and a gal who was not his mom. They were laughing in the picture. Time has forgotten why.

Life has been hard for Matt. His parents never married and broke up early on. He has known a string of fatherlike replacements, but none have stuck. They were around for a while until a new one showed up. Maybe that was good. At five, he distinctly recalled the adults in his life smoking. He asked to try. One person thought it would be funny to give him something “better,” a hit of marijuana. That blazed a path of a nearly four-decade battle with addiction.

At eight months, Matt got Transverse Myelitis, causi…

Created to Draw Near: Our Life as God’s Royal Priests by Edward T. Welch (Giveaway

Image
Noon today Crossway is giving away five copies of  Created to Draw Near: Our Life as God's Royal Priests by Edward T. Welch on Tim Challies' site.
From the publisher:You are a royal priest.
That Reality Will Change Your Life

Human beings are wired for connection. We long for deep relationships and real intimacy―both of which reflect our fundamental desire to be close to God. But all too often, whether because of our sin or our failures, we imagine that God prefers to keep his distance.

In this book, Edward T. Welch shows us the purpose for which we were created: to be brought near to God as a kingdom of priests. He traces the priestly identity throughout the entire Bible, showing us how holiness leads to closeness to God. Through the blood of Jesus, God extends his invitation for all to draw near with open arms. And in his presence, we discover what it means to be truly human: known, unashamed, and wise, full of meaning, purpose, and abundant life.

21 Years by TobyMac (Video)

Image
I am not sure you followed the death of Toby Mac's 21-year-old son, Truett. He died of cardiac arrest.

Toby said of Truett's faith, "Truett always had a soft spot for God. The Bible moved him. His heart was warm to the things of his King. He was by no means a cookie cutter Christian but give me a believer who fights to keep believing. Give me a broken man who recognizes his need for a Savior every time. That’s who Truett was and how he should be remembered."

The other day Toby Mac released a music video sharing his heart. It is hard to watch it with a dry eye. Here is the video.

Mom Enough: The Fearless Mother's Heart and Hope (Free)

Image
Faithlife is giving away Mom Enough: The Fearless Mother’s Heart and Hope for free this month.
From the publishers:Are you mom enough? The cover of a popular magazine asked this haunting question in bold red letters that hung over the startling image of a young mother nursing her four-year-old. When the issue hit newsstands, it re-ignited a longstanding mommy war in American culture. But it turns out this was the wrong question, pointing in the wrong direction. There is a higher and more essential question faced by mothers: Is he God enough? This short book with twenty-four short contributions from seven young mothers, explores the daily trials and worries of motherhood. In the trenches, they have learned how to treasure God and depend on his grace. The paradox of this book is the secret power of godly mothering. Becoming mom enough comes as a result of answering the burning question above with a firm no.

Christianity on Trial: A Lawyer Examines the Christian Faith by W. Mark Lanier (Free)

Image
Logos is giving away Christianity on Trial: A Lawyer Examines the Christian Faith by W. Mark Lanier Free this month.
From the publisher: Does the Christian faith hold up under scrutiny? What does science tell us about the plausibility of a god? Can we trust the alleged eyewitness testimony of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus? These questions are worth investigating in order to find an answer solidified in fact and evidence. Mark Lanier, one of America's top trial lawyers, uses his experienced legal eye to examine the plausibility of the Christian faith. Bringing science, current knowledge, and common sense together in a courtroom approach, this "trial" elucidates a rich understanding of God and a strong foundation for Christian faith. Following the format of a traditional legal trial, Lanier takes us from opening statement to closing summation by way of testimony from well-known witnesses―the scientist, the theologian, the linguist, the humanist, the philosopher…
